Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel Pose)

Introduction

Urdhva Dhanurasana, commonly known as the Wheel Pose, is an advanced backbend that strengthens the entire body while improving flexibility and posture. In this pose, the body forms the shape of a wheel as the hands and feet press firmly into the ground, lifting the chest and hips upward. It is a powerful heart-opening posture that enhances energy, confidence, and overall body awareness.

Regular practice of Urdhva Dhanurasana helps build strength in the arms, shoulders, legs, back, and core while increasing flexibility in the spine, chest, and hip flexors. This pose also improves balance, expands lung capacity, and encourages deep breathing. Since it is an intense backbend, beginners should warm up thoroughly and practice under proper guidance until they develop enough strength and flexibility.

How to Perform Urdhva Dhanurasana

Step 1: Lie on Your Back

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet hip-width apart. Place your feet close to your hips.

Bend your elbows and place your palms on the mat beside your ears, with fingers pointing toward your shoulders.

Press your feet firmly into the floor and activate your core and leg muscles to prepare for lifting.

Press through your hands and feet simultaneously, lifting your hips, chest, and head off the floor until your arms become straight.

Keep your arms and legs active while opening your chest toward the ceiling. Breathe deeply and hold the pose for 5–10 breaths.

Bend your elbows gently and lower your head, shoulders, and back to the mat with control. Rest for a few breaths.
